Although there had been early mail carrying flights in Germany from 1912 (Bork-Brück flight), the first official German airmail service commenced 5th February 1919 on the Berlin-Leipzig-Weimar route, reducing the time of mail delivery from five days to four hours. This mail was carried by the "Deutsche LuftreEderei" a commercial line inaugurated in 1918, and licensed by the German Government in January 1919. Later in 1919 the Berlin-Hamburg route was added, and then another service from Berlin via Hamburg to the Rhine and Ruhr industrial areas.
By 1923 there were over 30 different German airlines covering the whole of Europe.
