Peter Henlein was born in Nuremberg in 1480. Little is known of his early life, but he served his apprenticeship and became a master clockmaker on 16th November 1509. He devoted himself to the production of a pocket watch. The French invention of a main spring drive was the first step to such an invention. Henlein is credited with producing in 1510 the "Nuremberg egg" watch. He died 14th November 1542. The memorial depicted on the stamp was erected in 1903.
