Malmedy and Moresnet are small towns in the Belgian province of Liege. Malmedy originally belonged to the imperial abbey of Stavelot, a principality of the Holy Roman Empire.
After the French Revolution, the Vienna Treaty (1815) allotted the eastern part of this district with Malmedy to Prussia. The Versailles Treaty after World War I gave the whole of this principality to Belgium.
After the invasion of Belgium by Germany, this territory was annexed to Germany 18th May 1940. This action naturally was not recognised by the Belgian government in exile, and after World War II the territory was again reunited with Belgium.Special cancelations series
