A digest of the official Nazi Party interpretation of this symbol is as follows: The figure seven was the ancient sign for luck and prosperity. In runic numerals the seven has a short bar across the bottom, thus, two sevens superimposed give the swastika, a two-fold symbol of luck. The word "swastika" is of Indian origin, meaning "luck and prosperity". The origin of the swastika goes so far back that it cannot be traced. It is certain that India used it as the sign of Sivia very early on and the name is from the Sanskrit, meaning "fire cradle" or "catherine wheel" and is associated with the rays of the sun and fire. The right handed swastika is the good principle, whilst the left handed "sauvastika" was the bad or unlucky principle.
