Married women were encouraged in every way to have large families; indeed, this was deemed a duty. There was a mother's medal awarded to mothers with large families. A bronze, silver, or gold medal was awarded according to the number of children in the family. The gold medal was one of the few actually made in gold at this time in Germany.
